I knew immediately that this cup wanted blue vertical strips topped with vermillion-orange dots

as I began applying those, I could tell that the in-between spaces wanted their own tiny vignettes, so I separated the initial pattern - next came the horizontal blue stripes, alternating to leave room for some yet unknown shape - next the brown triangles, then the trio, and finally the little strips of gold

the resulting motif reminds me of a recent trip to Japan
